Esau & Jacob, Genesis 25:27-34

The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. Isaac (their father), who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah (their mother)  loved Jacob.

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished (hungry). He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished (hungry)!”

Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.

So Esau despised his birthright.

Point #1

When we are not filled by God, we make (rash/quick) bad decisions.

Genesis 26:34-35

When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah (Esau’s parents).

 

Note: Our (rash/quick) bad decisions will have negative consequences — not just for us — but for people around us.

Point #2

When we are not filled by God, we become tired, unmotivated.

Ecclesiastes 2:11

Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.

Mark 14:32-42

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

When we are filled by God, we make the right decisions/choices for our lives — because God leads us.

When we are filled by God, we stand firm — and nothing will shake us.
